Hoagie Musings: This morning I thought, “I wonder from where the word ‘hoagie’ originated. That’s a funny word.” Then at lunch, as if by magic, Saveur Magazine gave me the answer: “. . .jazzman Al De Palma .  . . opened a deli in 1936, coining his wares after a comment he’d made years earlier while watching fellow musicians devour Italian sandwiches: ‘You had to be a hog’ to eat one. Over the years, his ‘hoggies’ became ‘hoagies.’ ” (Saveur, April 2011, pg. 49) BRILLIANT! ~AKH
